Radio, the Answer to Small Business Job Recruiting

Optimism, patience, imagination, courage.

These were the four qualities Ernest Shackleton, famed early-20th century Antarctic explorer, sought when recruiting adventurers.

Ernest didn’t have the technology in 1914 that we have now - but he emphasized something in recruiting that is a vital lesson to small businesses doing the same in the 2020s - a personal touch.

It’s easier said than done, but one medium conveys it much more effectively than others - radio. Let’s explore why, shall we?

Like Radio Advertising, Radio Recruiting Lets You Show Personality & Be Remembered

Let’s face it, even the most dynamic job posting is still…a job posting. There’s only so much pizzazz, flair, creativity - call it what you will - you can exercise on one.

Radio has the ability to capture people. Whether it’s your personality or your business’, channeling it on the airwaves instead of just a sea of text is a sure-fire way to perk the ears of exactly the type of worker(s) you need.

As for being remembered - the term in the industry is frequency, and radio is king at doing just that. Someone may hear your recruitment ad and initially feel on the fence about it… which is a prime position to be fully swayed when they hear it again. There is a long, long way in between resonance and annoyance, and that’s a huge sweet spot for businesses seeking help.

Radio is the Center of the Audio Universe. And Audio is the future.

Radio draws ears. Tons of them.

According to Nielsen’s Audio Today report in June, radio reaches 93% of the U.S. population. Now of course, not everyone is looking for a job. Regardless, radio thrives in reaching those who are.

It reaches 84% of adults who plan on looking for a job within the next year. Think about that metric! It accounts for not just those currently out of work, but even those with jobs who just have their ears open to other options.

Out of that same report is an even more shocking reach percentage; 87% of adults over the past year who have used the internet or an app for a job search.

What a great segue into the mess that is recruitment options for small businesses…

Radio Cuts Through the Hiring Noise

There is a flurry of recruitment websites out there, and while that’s a net positive for our big picture of labor, it’s excruciatingly difficult for small businesses to know which to use - much less be able to stand out on it.

Radio is just easier - and here’s the kicker - for everyone. All you (as the SMB owner) need to do is find the right stations with the right demographic for your product or service, and the company’s team will handle the process from start to finish. As for the job seekers, their only effort in hearing about your openings is tuning in - and we’ve already established they’re doing it in droves!

The word here is convenience, the same feature that makes radio advertising so darn effective. As a small business owner, you know the importance of getting the most bang for your precious buck, and considering how cost-effective recruiting on the radio is, it’s simply a no-brainer.

Local Radio = Local Job Seekers

Television, social media, print, and paid search can all be entertaining and/or effective forms of advertising and communication. But they lack one thing radio possesses - a reflection of their users/watchers/readers’ communities.

For job postings specifically, newspaper classifieds were once all the rage. Love it or hate it, those days are virtually gone. Radio though? It’s thriving, local even more so.

Local radio means local DJs, local content, and local small and medium businesses spreading their word. The content is contextual in its appeal to a local listener. Radio is a slice of life for the area people know and love, and it’s why job seekers tune in.
